LANPARTY

Pre-event Preparations and Checklist

  • Know where you're going:

Click here and then here for a close-up. Know what time you've got to be there for.

  • Make sure you have a fully functional PC. Now you might think this is obvious, but its surprising how many people waste the first hour (or more) of a LAN installing/re-installing software.
  • Patch all your games to the latest version. We usually have the latest versions of games/updates and we'll make them available at the event but this saves time and bandwidth on the day. Furthermore, install any games that you may play before you arrive, thus saving even more time!
  • This is a Local Area Network event so make sure you have a 10/100Mb network card! The event uses a fully switched 100Mbit network so you'll get the best performance if you bring a 100Mb card. If you require one of these and are unsure where to get one please contact me.
  • Disable all network software you might use on your home network. For example DHCP servers, firewalls and most importantly, Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). So many network problems can be caused by the use of firewall software. If you don't know how to disable these services, ask someone to help you BEFORE you plug into the network.
  • Set your workgroup to MSHOME. This helps people who are trying to browse network content using Network Neighbourhood.
  • Check Our Page for last minute event news in case of any changes. You never know - i might have updated the page ;-))

Hardware

  • Your PC - you may want to bring an extension cord/power cable just in case we have not got enough on the day.
  • Your Monitor (as above).
  • Keyboard, mouse and joystick/pad - Don't forget your mouse surface, the tables are less than ideal for this.
  • Headphones and/or Microphone - Speakers are not the preferred option so please don't bring them and think of others.
  • Software - In the unfortunate event of you having problems, you may need your installation discs/drivers etc to resolve the issue.
  • Chairs - are welcomed but there will be a plentiful supply of ordinary chairs (Bring pillows to increase comfort).
  • Network Cable - although we provide the switch and have a fair supply, its always good policy to bring your own with you.

 Food

  • There is a usually a mammoth pizza run on the night, and we always strive to get good deals on pizza for everyone.
  • There are local shops within walking distance till 22:00.
  • Many fast food outlets and superstores are within a short car journey. Generally someone makes a trip!!!
  • Consuming too much chocolate and coke will make you feel awful. It is suggested that you bring sandwiches and other savoury snacks.
  • Energy products are a good idea to improve your stamina and longevity.

Remember, if you're interested in coming along then drop me a mail: mshort77@hotmail.com

Before you come along it would be advisable to go here for a free online virus checking service (unless you already have a virus checker that is:) and ensure that your "Machine, is Clean".
